Biking and Inca Jungle Trail - 4 days

The Inca Jungle Trail is a fantastic alternative to the commercial Inca Trail. It does include 80 km downhill biking through the Peruvian jungle and a 3-day hike ending up in Machu Picchu.

Day 1: Cusco - Santa Maria (Mountain Biking)

At 8 a.m. we leave Cusco and head to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, where we'll enjoy incredible landscapes. About midday, we arrive at the high Abra Malaga (4,350m). Here we will start the fun part of the day - the breathtaking downhill ride to the jungle. On our way, we'll pass small villages, fruit plantations and some rivers. At about 6 p.m. we will arrive at the small, charming town of Santa María (1,500m).

Day 2: Santa Maria - Santa Teresa (Inca Trail)

After an early, nutritious and complete breakfast at 6am, we start the trek along the riverside. We will have many possibilities to observe diverse flora and fauna, for example: birds, parrots, hummingbirds, eagles, and more... as well as medicinal plants and tropical fruits like bananas, mangos, oranges, cacao, pacay and coca and coffee plantations and much more. In the village of Quellomayo, we will have a delicious lunch. After reenergizing, we'll continue the walk along the riverside to the medical hot springs Colcamayo. Here we have time to relax and enjoy the hot springs in a quiet natural surroundings. The place where we will stay overnight - Santa Teresa - is only a stone?s throw away.

Day 3: Santa Teresa - Aguas Calientes (Inca Trail)

We begin the day with a nice breakfast and then get started for the third day - the Inca Jungle Trail. By private transportation, we will go to Lucmabamba, where the Inca Trail starts. This part was recently discovered in 2003. The path is in good condition and offers spectacular views of Machu Picchu and the holy mountain of Salkantay. After a 3-hour hike, we arrive at Llactapata, a holy place. Here you can see how the jungle has covered parts of the Inca ruins.

We will have our lunch in Llactapata. Afterwards, we continue hiking down to the hydro-electric train station. From there, we will go by train to Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu. After walking around the town, we'll enjoy a delicious dinner.

Day 4: Machu Picchu - Cusco

At 5:30 a.m. we will hike on natural, jungle paths towards the ruins of Machu Picchu. After enjoying the sunrise, we will continue the trek to the Inti Punku Puerta del Sol. Arriving at Machu Picchu we'll take a 2-hour guided tour. Afterwards, you'll have enough free time to see the following attractions: Wiñayhuayna, Inca Bridge, or the Temple of the Moon. Around midday, we'll return to Aguas Calientes. You can return by a bus to Aguas Calientes at your own expense. From Aguas Calientes we will take the train to Ollantaytambo and then by bus to Cusco.
